Tom’s initial post-graduate (Art Institute of Chicago) work in the 1970s was Midwestern landscapes and clouds. In the 1980s he experimented with painting abstract forms in various sensuous combinations.
Upon moving to Florida in the late 1980s, Seghi painted seascapes with the colorful palette produced by the intense Florida sun. Later, he began combining the seascapes with stream-of-consciousness writing, abstract forms and collage. By the 1990s, as his work was sought by local and national galleries, his work evolved into large photo-realistic fruit (and vegetables), paintings with which he often became identified.)
In addition to his fruit paintings, Seghi demonstrated his expertise in rendering objects realistically by creating trompe-l’oeil paintings of his art brushes and scrapers. In some of the paintings, the actual object is placed side by side to an exact painted rendering of that object by his eye/hand. Viewers often register an “aha!” when they realize the aesthetic humor of the painting.
